Creating S.M.A.R.T Goals

The start of a new year is typically when people start with their New Year’s Resolutions.  The most common resolutions are saving moeny, making money and loosing weight.  People are very excited and motivated in the beginning.  They’ve saved a dollar a day for 10 days, researched how to turn their passion into dollars, and have made the gym a part of their routine for at least 3 out of 7 days!  Then life happens.  An unexpected lunch date has taken the dollar-a-day savings for the next 10 days and overtime on the job has held you hostage! Now, not only are you unable to pursue your true passion, you are so exhausted that you drive directly home…bypassing the gym!

Part of the reason why people give up on their goals is because they are not S.M.A.R.T. (Specific. Measurable. Attainable. Realistic. Timely.)  What does that mean?  Not that your goals aren’t good, they just need to be tweeked a bit.

Specific: What do you want to accomplish?  Why is this important to you?  Who will be involved in helping you?

Measurable: How much? How many? How will I know when the goal is accommplished?

Attainable: How can the goal be accomplished? Make the goal high enough that if you are are shooting for the moon and miss at least you will be among the stars!

Realistic: Are you willing and able to work toward the goal?  Do you BELIEVE you can accomplish the goal?

Timely:  When will the goal be met?  What can you do today, in 30, 60 or even 90 days to ensure the goal will be accomplished?

Using the S.M.A.R.T. method will keep most people from getting discouraged and at the same time keep them motivated to actually acheiving the goal.
